Several months ago, I was working on a laptop for one of my users. Actually, I was transferring information from old computer to new computer.
During the move, I noticed that he had a sticker on his laptop. I took a while to read it, and really took it to heart. It was a quote by James Keller, “A candle looses nothing by lighting another.”. Part of the culture at my job is always asking “How does this apply to me?”. During the past years of working in IT (nearly 30 years), there is a lot of information that I have learned, and a lot more that I have forgotten as well. During this time, I’ve talked with a number of friends about their experiences at blogging, and have been directed that I should share my years of knowledge and experiences (both good and bad), with folks.
So, here we are. In looking at this as a project, (although one that has no ending date), I had to determine what I wanted my site to look like, what I wanted to do with it. Those are tall orders to try to answer. I’ve not worried that much about what my site looks like, and what I can do with it. I determined that would be part of my “scope creep”, and let the site evolve. I’m sure that there isn’t another blogger our there who’s site has been up for a while that would tell me it hasn’t changed over time. I wouldn’t believe it if they did say that.
So, here are some things that I can tell you from the start. This blog will change with time. I’ll take your comments: good, bad, and indifferent, and try to grow this site to what the tech community needs it to be. I have ideas on what I want to do with it, and things I’d like to try. Time will let us experiment with things. We will keep what works, and get rid of those things that don’t work.
Some of the categories of my posts will be related to: General Information, PowerShell, Active Directory, General Technology, Crystal Reports, Mobility, Wireless, VoIP, General Networking, MySQL, Microsoft SQL, Leadership, and a Quote of the Day.
I’m currently working on an editorial calendar, but, that’s just to let me know that I’ve got something to say for a particular day. I’m using it as a planning tool, but, if I find a comment or question that I can answer, I’ll move the calendar around to get the question answered.
The site and posts might not be as polished as some others, but, I’ll give you my best at making the content as accurate as I can.
One of the things that I have found, is that I always start my day off with a quote from someone. I’m not picky, I just read the quote and ask “How does this apply to me?”. Some days, the quote is very applicable, others not so much. So, at 6:00 AM ET, I will have a quote of the day. These come from a variety of sources, and I’ll rotate the sources around so, you don’t get the same type every day.
Like I have said, I’m writing an editorial calendar, so, I can get ahead of writing my posts. They will be published at 7:30 AM ET. My goal is to publish daily. You can follow me on Facebook (Jimmy Dixon), or on Twitter (@SQLBeard) and see when things go up.
This is going to be a journey for me, so, come along for the ride.
I’m glad you are blogging, my friend! :{>
Cool. Happy birthday, and I’m looking forward to what you have to share. 🙂
